Cambodia: It started with a cow

Children with no clothes to wear. A house with only two walls. Fishing in the river, hoping to catch enough for the day’s meal. It was the best one Cambodian family could afford.

That was eight years ago. Then the local church came with the gift of a cow from their cow bank. With careful attention and breeding, the cow multiplied from one to eight.

Two cows were returned to the church animal bank and given out to families in need.  Two cows were sold for a profit. The other cows are cared for in the barn, an open structure set on top of a hill to protect from the yearly flooding!

Today, the children all have clothes, their newly-expanded house has a metal roof to protect from the seasonal monsoons, and they earn enough from selling their corn crop to ensure that they have food each day.

This all began because someone like you decided to change someone’s life by providing the gift of a cow.

Cows for Cambodia are not featured in Gift of Hope 2011, because the cow bank programme of the local partner ministry has been so successful that it is now self-sufficient, with calves being returned to the bank and re-gifted to other local families in need. Now that’s a gift with impact!
