Senegal: Nutrition class for new mothers

WorldShare’s partners in Senegal run a nutrition programme for mothers and babies, providing milk and cereal, and training on how to cook with local ingredients to provide the best nutrition for their children. They also provide medical help.

"Recently, we received a patient who was four months old, very weak, and weighing just six pounds,” share our partners. “She was also suffering from a cleft palate. This baby girl was not able to eat and suffered from frequent infections. Her mother was not taking good care of her.

“In Senegalese culture, disabled children are usually abandoned to their own luck. Her chance of survival was very small. However, it always struck us how her eyes were communicating her desire to live. One of our main challenges was to motivate her mother to love and care for her baby.

"After several weeks, her health started to improve. She started gaining weight and now she is able to eat.

"She is a beautiful baby girl who is able to play and smile, and it's a great blessing to see how her mother is now proud of her and taking very good care of her.

"After a period of hard work and prayer we feel blessed to have been able to save a life and to re-establish the love of a mother and her daughter. We trust God to use us to develop Kingdom values within this family. We thank God for this testimony and our prayer is that He will give us the grace to continue touching the lives of many more people according to His will."

In total, 287 children have benefitted from this nutrition programme in Senegal; 1261 children have been vaccinated; 2224 children have benefitted from the vaccination, hygiene and nutrition programmes and 33,487 children have received medical help.
