Better news from Mali

WorldShare staff recently visited our partners in Mali. Regular readers of E-News will know that the majority of the Christian community in Mali has been driven from their homes and are living as refugees in the capital, Bamako, and other southern areas.

Tuareg nationalist and Muslim fundamentalists have taken over the centre and north of Mali and are busy creating an Islamic state.

In all, 54 families totalling 354 persons are registered with our partners’ Crisis Committee. They are living in 5 different areas of Bamako. They are still liable to be moved at short notice by landlords; food is still in short supply and, due to a change in the weather, many are falling sick with malaria.

Despite their many difficulties, our colleagues found lots of smiles and laughs amongst the refugees. They also found a growing sense that they are not going to be able to return to their homes anytime soon, and a determination to build lives for themselves, and  churches and ministries, where God has put them now.

Church meetings are underway in all the areas where the refugees are accommodation. They are also planting new churches, and bringing more people to Christ, in Sevare, Niamana, Gouraba, and Fana.

Mali radio

The project of translating the Bible into Songhai is continuing.

A new Christian radio station in Tamashek (the Tuareg language) has started broadcasting; they are holding regular classes in women’s rights and vocational training for women; there are activities including summer camps for children.

Their desire to serve God is irrepressible.

The refugees still need food (especially protein), clothes and household utensils, better housing and better medical facilities. The ministries they have started all need lots of extra support.

But good things are happening. God has turned what the evil of the fighting into good for numerous communities in the south, which now have an active Christian witness for the first time.

Your prayers and help are most welcome.
