In July 2011, South Sudan will come into existence as the name of the world’s newest country.
The historic moment follows January’s referendum in which around 99% of southern Sudanese voted for independence from the north of the country.
The change brings to a conclusion prolonged uncertainty surrounding the future of the south, after the tragedy of decades of north-south conflict in Sudan. By the time a peace accord was finally signed in 2005, an estimated 2 million people had been killed, and millions more displaced.
