Transport emergency in Myanmar
The cost of motoring continues to rise, something we can all appreciate. Like many of you, all of us in the WorldShare office have recent tales to tell of expensive garage bills.
We're sharing this, becuase we have been made aware of an urgent need for a suitable vehicle for the Word of Hope orphanage in Yangon (Rangoon), the largest city and former capital of Myanmar (Burma).
Pastor Pau wrote to us: "I want to share with you one thing which is my heavy burden. The military government has a new vehicle policy that is to cancel or destroy old vehicles in our country from September to December 2011.
"I have an old 1985-model car - you rode in it last time you visited us. Our old car is included in the models whose registration will be cancelled by the government before the end of December this year. The order is already out from the government.
"There is good news however, in that the government will give us a permit to purchase a 2002 model within our own country. If we want to get a new car, we need to pay the government £10,000, which includes the purchase price, taxes and related costs."
Pastor Pau's 1985-model car is the only transport available to the orphanage and is used to ferry the children to and from school, doctor's appointments, church services, outings to enrich their life experience, and so-on.
With nearly 50 children now calling the Word of Hope orphanage 'home', something like the Nissan Urvan (pictured left) cannot be viewed as a luxury, but vital to the health, education and happiness of the children.
We are very conscious of the pressures on people's income in the current strained and uncertain economic climate.
But any gift you could make - whether large or small - towards the purchase of a new vehicle would be most gratefully appreciated, not only by us but also by Pastor Pau himself, together with all the children in our slideshow!
