Dignity and sustenance for senior citizens, Guatemala

632020

Once they reach 65, the elderly people of the city dump community in Guatemala City are no longer allowed to scavenge the refuse for food or for items to sell. There is no pension or state benefits. Their families need everything they can scavenge to feed themselves and their children.

Most of these elderly 'treasures' - as they are known by our local partners - find themselves alone, effectively housebound, poor and hungry. Not only have they lost their income, but they have lost their sense of self-worth.

Our partners help by providing a bag of staple foods every second week.  Sometimes hot meals can be provided at the Casa del Alfarerocentre. This provides good nourishment for the elderly and shows them they are loved.

Your gift, of any size, will help an elderly person regain dignity and have food to live. Regular giving is especially welcome for this project.
