Asha Kiran

WorldShare's newest partner ministry brings a ray of hope to the lives of India's disabled children.

The need to serve children with disabilities in India is huge. An estimated 20 million Indian children have some kind of disability and the majority get little help.

Many are marginalised, unable to attend school, prevented from leaving the house, shut away for bringing shame on the family, or perhaps sent out to beg. The fate of disabled girls is much worse.

Asha Kiran 1

Asha Kiran Special Needs School in Bangalore has been serving disabled children since 1993. It serves the physically or mentally disabled, the deaf, autistic or dyslexic child, helping to give them a full and happy life, and to provide vocational and life skills.

Asha Kiran – which means ‘ray of hope’ in many Indian languages - works to re-educate families and communities as well as care for the children.

In addition to general educational subjects, Asha Kiran majors on Art Therapy, enabling otherwise uncommunicative youngsters to express themselves in a variety of media. Asha Kiran also has a strong IT-teaching department, enabling youngsters to find work in the region’s fast-growing industry.

Asha Kiran 2

Asha Kiran gives its pupils a protected and loving atmosphere in which to learn.  For some of the children this is the first time they have been appreciated, or known love, in their lives – and they blossom!

Right now this precious work is in need of extension. Asha Kiran needs to build a new Hostel and Vocational Training Centre for girls. The centre will provide training in Screen Printing, Clay Modelling, Tailoring, Bakery and Confectionery, Jewellery Making. Beauty Culture, IT and other skills, and accommodate 25-30 needy girls.
