All these ministries are carried out in the context of one of the world’s most politically isolated countries, under the watchful eye of Myanmar’s repressive military regime.
After Cyclone Nargis brought devastation to Myanmar in May 2008, Word of Hope responded with extensive post-cyclone recovery projects, including:
-
house building
-
food distribution
-
community development.
In countries like Myanmar, WorldShare’s method of direct partnership with accountable Christian partners is most effective.
In the wake of Cyclone Nargis, our emergency appeal by-passed obstacles – many imposed by the Burmese military regime – which hindered the efforts of the large international aid agencies.
Children's Home
About 41 children are cared for by trained Word of Hope church leadership and staff. Their home is a modern building situated in a region of fields and poor houses to the east of Yangon.
Many children at the home are from troubled backgrounds in Myanmar's provinces. Some are 'true' orphans, having lost both parents. Others are from violent or irrecoverable family breakdown.
Some of the neediest children are sponsored by WorldShare supporters through our ChildAid scheme.
The orphanage provides the best possible care, with limited resources, in a Christian environment. Medical checks are provided, and Word of Hope plan to increase educational opportunities for the children as part of future expansion.
