Quechua Literacy Programme

In the altiplano (high plains) of the Bolivian Andes, the Quechua Literacy Programme (QLP) assists remote communities with literacy training, in recognition that literacy is key to positive transformation of the life and lives of the Quechua.

QLP’s core vision is to tackle the widespread problem of illiteracy, which denies Quechua the opportunity for employment. As a result, many have no option but to continue clinging to life at a subsistence level, as they have for generations.

Other QLP projects exist to help these communities improve their lives, notably in agriculture and health care.  Income generation projects train women in manual skills, from crafts to making clothes, which enable them to earn a living.

Run by local Christians, QLP also plants and nurtures small churches and fellowship groups which help with the communities’ many spiritual needs.  Leadership courses for Quechua are regularly held in key towns of the region.

QLP planned 15 new literacy centres in four regions - Oruro, Cochabamba, Potosi and Chuquisaca - for 2008.  More workers are continually needed to fulfil this expanding vision.

QLP leader Nelly Cruz, a Quechua, serves 3 rural centres, Amayapampa, Aco Aco and Challacollo, teaching families to read Spanish and Quechua. She also pastors a church.
